Franky had 2 injections in mid-March to try to alleviate some the symptoms of his sweet itch and there are indications that this has helped tremendously, however it has not been 100% successful. We are still applying extra treatments to his mane and tail to give him a bit more relief from the symptoms and keep the flies/midges away.
He is groomed each day and ridden out at least twice a week by the ASHA carers. Helen also uses him in lessons and Natural Horsemanship courses.
We are still looking for someone to adopt him, preferably by a child or small adult (70kg max) with reasonable riding experience (not a total beginner)
Franky and Jolly will be adopted together as a pair, as agreed at the ASHA committee meeting of the 30th April 2012.
Rescuing Franky...
Summer 2011 a lorry carrying live horses to be slaughtered in Italy was stopped by the authorities and whilst the animals were rested a retired vet living in France got to hear about it. This lady is known for rescuing old horses and giving them a loving home where they can live out their days. Fortunately for Franky this lady took him home.
However, the lady thought that at 16 y.o. Franky was too young for the rather slow and peaceful life of her herd and on hearing about the rehabilitation and rehoming work done by ASHA she contacted us to ask if we would consider taking Franky. Of course we said 'yes', we thought that we could help Franky find a home where he could have a useful and fun life, possibly with a family.
So in August 2011 he arrived at Cantemerle.
Franky is being regularly ridden by ASHA volunteers and is proving to be a very good boy! So good in fact, we would now like to find him a home with someone who will appreciate this super little man. He would suit a child or small adult and ideally it would be great if he could be adopted alongside his best buddy - Jolly!!!
Franky is doing really well. As you can see from the photos below Helen has been riding him and he is demonstrating his skills at gate opening/closing and showing us he isn't concerned about tractors.
Franky has been at Cantemerle for a couple of weeks and has settled in very well.
He is a little overweight having been looked after very well for the last few months by his rescuer. Yesterday our vet checked him out and found him to be pretty healthy apart from some sweetitch on his mane and tail. He needs to be exercised and Helen has already ridden him. The ASHA volunteers are also walking him in hand regularly.
We don't think it will be too long before Franky will be ready to be adopted, possibly by a teenager or small adult. Although around 14.3hh he is quite a solid looking chap with a sweet and willing nature.
